At Mamancy Tea, we believe that the best black teas are bold and brimming with flavor. That is why we are constantly innovating new and unique blends, while still honoring traditional processes and holding true to time-tested favorites.

To create our premium black teas, we begin by sourcing tea leaves from small gardens throughout India, Europe, and China. We then use the Cut, Torn, Crushed (CTC) processing method, which encourages oxidization and results in a stronger black tea. Finally, we dry our leaves by either firing, air drying, or quick heating. Each of these approaches helps increase the flavor’s intensity, so you can count on a strong and full-bodied cup of tea.

History of Black Tea

Black tea is the most widely consumed type of tea in Western culture. Its popularity goes all the way back to the 17th century; since black tea leaves are oxidized during processing, they were able to retain their flavor better than other types of tea during long journeys. 

Since black tea remains fresher for longer, it could withstand the voyage from China to Europe or the American colonies while still offering a strong and rich flavor. For this reason, it became a highly desired treat throughout the Western world.

Health Properties of Black Tea

  • Promotes heart health
    Some studies indicate that black tea and other teas from the Camellia sinensis plant can lower blood pressure and LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol levels, which are two leading causes of heart disease. 
  • Can boost weight loss
    Research suggests that the polyphenols in black tea can inhibit lipid (fat) digestion, which may promote fat metabolism and reduce oxidative stress, which damages cells. Overall, these effects can help prevent obesity or encourage weight loss.
  • Contains substantial caffeine levels
    All black teas contain a considerable amount of caffeine, which has been linked to heightened anxiety and poor sleep – both of which can exacerbate depression. Though not everyone has an adverse reaction to caffeine, it is important to use it cautiously.

How to Prepare Black Tea

How you prepare your cup of tea can impact how well the flavors come through. To ensure you are enjoying all of the rich and robust flavors that black tea has to offer, here is a guide on how to prepare your tea:

  • Use filtered water at a boiling point of 212° F. Many teas have subtle flavors that can be masked by using poor quality water, so it is important to use filtered water for brewing tea. Water at 212° F is also ideal for producing a stronger flavor.
  • Use a heaping teaspoon (~3g) of tea per 6oz cup. Flavor and taste can differ significantly depending on the specific tea, so you can add a little more or less depending on your personal preferences. 
  • Follow steeping time instructions. Steeping times differ depending on the type of leaf and its grade. Many teas will yield a pale yellow liquid, but tea should always be brewed by time and not by color of the brew. 
  • Never over or under-steep your tea. Steeping your tea past the recommended time can make it bitter, and under-steeping can result in a pale cup or inferior flavor. If you want a stronger cup of tea, adjust the amount of tea you are using rather than changing how long you are steeping it.
